Lakers’ Strategic Move for Future Success

The Los Angeles Lakers have made a significant roster move by waiving guard Shake Milton ahead of the July 20 contract guarantee deadline. The Lakers had until this date to decide whether to retain or release Milton, whose $3 million contract for the 2025–26 season was non-guaranteed. This decision comes as part of the team’s effort to create salary cap flexibility and ensure a competitive lineup for the upcoming NBA season.

Milton’s Contribution to the Lakers

Milton joined the Lakers midseason as part of the D’Angelo Russell trade and appeared in 30 games. During this time, he averaged 3.9 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. While his overall contributions were modest, Milton had moments of brilliance, including a standout 21-point performance against the Washington Wizards in January. Despite these flashes of potential, the Lakers’ front office has determined that the team needs to make room for a new addition.

Marcus Smart’s Arrival on the Horizon

The move to waive Milton is primarily aimed at clearing space to add veteran guard Marcus Smart to the roster. Smart, who is expected to join the Lakers following his buyout by the Washington Wizards, is known for his defensive prowess and leadership. The Lakers’ defense has been a major focus for the front office, and Smart is seen as a key piece in strengthening their backcourt defense.

More Roster Moves Likely to Follow

Although the Lakers have waived Milton, this may not be the final change in their roster. The Lakers may also waive Jordan Goodwin, another player on a non-guaranteed contract, to finalize the addition of Smart. These strategic moves reflect the Lakers’ commitment to improving their defense and creating a more balanced roster for the new season.
