Billie Jean King Receives Coveted Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame
Billie Jean King, renowned tennis player and advocate for women’s and LGBTQ+ rights, has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This recognition, which took place on a memorable Monday ceremony, adds to the illustrious history of the Walk, which has celebrated countless contributions to the entertainment industry since its inception nearly 67 years ago.
A Groundbreaking Moment
As recipient No. 2,807, King made history by becoming the first woman to receive a star in the newly established sports entertainment category, introduced in 2023. This category acknowledges the impact of athletes on the entertainment landscape.
Reflections from the Court to Hollywood
During a post-ceremony discussion with Leah Wyar, president of People magazine, King reminisced about her childhood experiences walking along Hollywood Boulevard with her mother. “We used to come up here and I used to look at the stars on the walk,” she reflected, expressing surprise at having now joined their ranks.
Support from Peers
The unveiling event saw attendance from notable figures such as Magic Johnson, Lakers legend and fellow Dodgers owner, and Oscar-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis, both of whom also possess stars on the Walk of Fame. Johnson praised King, stating, “You always fight for what’s right… to bring about change.” Curtis added, “Billie Jean King’s contribution is power. She’s power on the courts, she’s power in the courts, she’s power in the press…”
A Legacy of Activism
Billie Jean King is celebrated not just for her victorious match against Bobby Riggs during the 1973 “Battle of the Sexes” but also for her lasting commitments as an activist. A pioneer for women and LGBTQ+ rights, she is the founder of the Women’s Sports Foundation and the Women’s Tennis Association, and has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom along with the Congressional Gold Medal.
Legacy and Gratitude
In her own acknowledgment of the honor, King expressed her gratitude on Instagram, stating, “Words cannot express how honored and grateful I am to receive this star.” She underscored her role as a trailblazer for female athletes, asserting that while she is the first in her category, she will not be the last.
History Made
The Dodgers franchise, which has strong connections to King, previously received its own star in 2008, marking the first time a sports team was honored in this way. King’s wife, Ilana Kloss, also attended the ceremony, sharing in the joy of this historic occasion.
