The Birth of Cyanine: From a Casual Jam to a Unique Sound

In the summer of 2022, in a quiet barn nestled in the French countryside, a serendipitous jam session between cousins Math Sal and Johnny Jo led to the creation of Cyanine. Initially, the duo had no intention of forming a band. The two were simply passing time at their uncle’s birthday celebration, playing a half-broken amplifier, surrounded by family, friends, and a bit of wine. What started as a casual moment soon transformed into a creative spark.

“Something clicked,” says Math Sal, the frontman of Cyanine. “It wasn’t a decision, but more of an organic progression. We started jamming, and by the end of the weekend, voice memos had turned into full-fledged demos. Cyanine was taking shape.”

What followed was a distinct sound—one that fuses elements of alternative rock, blues, and hip-hop. This debut album, now taking shape, is a series of emotional vignettes exploring the complexities of coming of age. Cyanine’s sound is marked by its rawness, with influences from ’90s alternative rock and an undercurrent of hip-hop, reminiscent of early Beck. The band’s DIY approach to music-making ensures an intimate and occasionally rough-around-the-edges quality that is central to their identity.

Cyanine’s Debut Single: “When You Come Back Home”

Two weeks ago, Cyanine released their debut single, “When You Come Back Home.” The track, which embodies the band’s blend of genres, is accompanied by a black-and-white music video now available on YouTube. The video takes viewers through the aftermath of a breakup, revealing a narrative told through layered flashbacks. The emotional weight of the video is enhanced by the subtle but powerful performance of a six-year-old girl, whose presence brings a sense of emotional depth to the storyline.

“It wasn’t about trying to make something over-directed,” Math Sal explains. “We wanted to tell a story that felt real—to us and hopefully to others.”

Johnny Jo, the guitarist and composer of Cyanine, adds, “I layered in an erhu—a Chinese violin—on the choruses. Just a few lines, but it gave the track something distinct and unexpected, like the story itself.”

Looking Ahead: Cyanine’s Next Single, “Not Enough”

The band is already hard at work on their next single, “Not Enough,” scheduled for release next month. This track promises to build on their distinct sound, combining rock riffs with a sharper, more beat-driven energy, while still maintaining the emotional intensity that has already defined their music.
