Southern California Heat Wave Eases with Incoming Cool Weather
Southern California experienced an unanticipated heat wave in May that is set to dissipate as temperatures begin to drop over the weekend. The National Weather Service has forecasted a return to milder conditions for Mother’s Day, along with the possibility of fog and drizzle early next week.
Record Highs Documented
The high temperatures surged dramatically on Friday, marking record highs in several local areas. Notably, Woodland Hills reached 102 degrees, while Burbank recorded a sweltering 98 degrees. Saturday is anticipated to be another hot day, with similar extreme temperatures potentially breaking records in the San Fernando Valley and coastal regions hitting the upper 80s.
Cooling Trend Ahead
Fortunately for residents, the recent heat wave will soon be a memory. Temperatures are projected to decrease by approximately 5 degrees by Mother’s Day, bringing highs in the 80s for the Los Angeles basin, the 90s in the valleys, and a more temperate range of 60s to mid-70s along the beaches.
Expert Insight
Mike Wofford, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service, noted, “This is typically a pretty low-impact weather type of season. In May, we generally don’t see extremes like this. Yesterday was an exception in terms of the heat.”
Forecast for the Coming Week
The cooler weather is expected to be accompanied by fog and breezy conditions on Monday, with daily temperatures falling into the high 60s and mid-70s—significantly below the seasonal norms. By Tuesday, further gray skies are likely, with chances of light rain and drizzle returning to the region.
