“The Addams Family” Musical Brings Dark Comedy to Thousand Oaks Stage

by LA News Daily Contributor

The Bank of America Performing Arts Center in Thousand Oaks is currently captivating audiences with its production of The Addams Family musical, a theatrical adaptation based on the beloved characters created by Charles Addams. This production, running through late May 2025, combines dark humor, catchy music, and a quirky storyline, offering a refreshing contrast to typical Broadway fare.

The Addams Family centers on the eccentric and spooky family whose members cherish the macabre. The musical’s plot focuses on Wednesday Addams’ romantic entanglement with a “normal” boy, which throws the entire family into comedic turmoil. The show’s unique charm lies in its ability to blend gothic motifs with heartfelt family themes, making it accessible and entertaining for all ages.

The Thousand Oaks production has been praised for its strong cast performances, particularly the actors playing Gomez and Morticia Addams, who bring a magnetic charisma and impeccable comedic timing. The director, Jonathan Wilson, noted in an interview, “This musical is a celebration of the unconventional and the power of family bonds. Our team is thrilled to bring these characters to life for our community.”

This staging is especially timely as local theater communities across California are recovering from the pandemic’s impact, with live performances experiencing renewed interest. According to Arts for LA, a nonprofit advocacy group, ticket sales and attendance in regional theaters have increased steadily in 2025, reflecting an appetite for live, local cultural events.

Audience member Lisa Chen shared her experience: “I loved how the show was funny but also had a lot of heart. It’s refreshing to see something so different from the usual musicals.”

The production also features original songs by Andrew Lippa, including the fan favorite “When You’re an Addams,” and innovative set designs that immerse the audience in the quirky world of the Addams family mansion. The musical’s blend of humor, gothic aesthetic, and memorable tunes has made it a hit, resonating beyond longtime fans to attract new audiences.

Beyond entertainment, the production has partnered with local schools to offer educational workshops that introduce students to theater arts and storytelling, fostering a new generation of cultural enthusiasts.

The Bank of America Performing Arts Center continues to schedule performances throughout the spring, making it one of the most anticipated arts events in the Thousand Oaks area.

For those interested, tickets are available online, and community groups can arrange special discounts for larger groups. Given the strong response, early booking is recommended.
