Investigation Update: Golf Cart Incident Involving John Elway’s Business Partner

Incident Overview

Authorities are nearing the conclusion of their investigation into the tragic death of Jeff Sperbeck, a close associate and business partner of former NFL star John Elway. The Riverside County Sheriff, Chad Bianco, reported that preliminary findings suggest there was “nothing nefarious” regarding the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Details of the Incident

The incident occurred on April 26, around 6:50 p.m., in the Madison Club community of La Quinta. Sperbeck, who was 62 years old and resided in San Clemente, fell from a moving golf cart, sustaining a head injury. He was later pronounced dead at Desert Regional Medical Center in the early hours of April 30.

At the time, Sperbeck was standing at the back of the cart, which was designed for two to four passengers. He was accompanied by Elway, their wives, and an unidentified individual, totaling five occupants in the vehicle.

Investigation Findings

Sheriff Bianco noted that while the identity of the driver has not been confirmed, evidence suggests that the driver is not at fault. There has been no indication that alcohol played a role in the accident. “There doesn’t appear to be any cause other than, for whatever reason, he fell off,” Bianco commented.

Response from John Elway

In a statement released following Sperbeck’s death, Elway expressed his deep sorrow, stating, “I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken.” He emphasized the profound loss of someone who contributed significantly to his life. “Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship, and love he brought into my life and the lives of so many others,” said Elway.

Jeff Sperbeck’s Legacy

Throughout his 30 years as an agent and business advisor, Sperbeck represented over 100 NFL players, beginning his association with Elway in 1990. Together, they co-founded 7Cellars winery, where Sperbeck took on the role of chief executive.

About John Elway

Elway is renowned for his illustrious 16-season career with the Denver Broncos, where he earned the league MVP award in 1987 and led his team to multiple Super Bowl championships. After retiring as a player, he transitioned into management roles within the Broncos organization, contributing to further Super Bowl appearances.
