Given the current changes, two hours seems prudent,” advised Breyault. If traveling with a group consisting of both Real ID and non-Real ID holders, additional time should be factored in.

Passed by Congress in 2005, the Real ID Act was put in place in response to the need for improved identification and security measures following the September 11 terrorist attacks. The original deadline for compliance was set for May 2008, but various funding, implementation challenges, and the COVID-19 pandemic delayed its rollout.
