Los Angeles Marathon Draws Thousands of Runners Across the City

Los Angeles came alive early Sunday morning as thousands of runners from across the United States and around the world gathered for the 41st annual ASICS Los Angeles Marathon. The iconic 26.2-mile race, one of the city’s most recognized sporting events, once again transformed major streets and neighborhoods into a vibrant route celebrating endurance, community, and athletic achievement.

The marathon, organized by The McCourt Foundation, follows the well-known “Stadium to the Stars” course. Runners begin near Dodger Stadium and travel through several of Los Angeles’ most recognizable districts, including Silver Lake, Hollywood, West Hollywood, and Beverly Hills, before finishing in Century City. Along the way, the route offers a sweeping tour of the city’s landmarks and diverse neighborhoods, with thousands of spectators lining the streets to cheer participants toward the finish line.

This year’s race marks the marathon’s 41st edition, continuing a tradition that has become a staple of Los Angeles’ sporting calendar. The event attracts professional athletes, amateur runners, charity participants, and first-time marathoners alike. Participants often train for months in preparation for the challenging distance, making race day the culmination of significant personal effort and dedication.

Organizers also emphasized the marathon’s role in bringing communities together. Throughout the course, live entertainment and volunteer groups provide encouragement and energy for runners. Local bands, cheer squads, and community organizations are stationed at various points, turning the race into a citywide celebration rather than just a competitive sporting event.

In addition to the main marathon, race weekend includes several related activities designed to engage runners of all ages and abilities. These events began earlier in the weekend with the LA 5K and the LA Kids Run, giving families and younger participants a chance to take part in the festivities. A large Health and Fitness Expo at Dodger Stadium also welcomed runners and spectators in the days leading up to the race, offering training resources, sports equipment exhibits, and health-related programming.

The marathon’s timing this year also required careful coordination with other major events in the city. Organizers scheduled the 2026 race for March 8 to avoid potential conflicts with other large-scale gatherings taking place in Los Angeles during the same period. The adjustment helped ensure smoother logistics for both participants and city officials managing traffic, safety, and event operations.

Because of the scale of the race, city officials implemented rolling street closures throughout the morning and early afternoon. Major roadways across several neighborhoods were temporarily restricted to accommodate runners and ensure safety along the route. Residents and commuters were advised in advance to plan alternate travel routes as the marathon passed through key areas of the city.

Despite these logistical challenges, the marathon remains widely embraced by local communities. Many Angelenos view the event as an opportunity to celebrate the city’s diversity and resilience. Neighborhoods along the course often host watch parties and informal gatherings, creating a festive atmosphere that encourages runners during the demanding race.

For elite competitors, the Los Angeles Marathon is also an important event in the international distance-running circuit. Professional athletes compete for top honors and recognition in one of the nation’s largest marathons. At the same time, thousands of recreational runners participate for personal milestones, whether completing their first marathon or achieving a long-standing athletic goal.

Charity participation continues to be a central element of the event. Many runners enter the marathon through nonprofit teams, using the race as a platform to support causes such as medical research, youth development programs, and community services. Over the years, the marathon has helped generate millions of dollars for charitable organizations, reinforcing its reputation as both a sporting and philanthropic initiative.

The race’s popularity reflects Los Angeles’ growing enthusiasm for outdoor fitness and large-scale athletic events. Running clubs and training groups across Southern California have expanded in recent years, with many participants targeting the marathon as a personal goal. For visitors traveling to the city specifically for the race, the event also contributes to the local economy by supporting hotels, restaurants, and tourism.

As runners crossed the finish line in Century City throughout the day, many were greeted by crowds of supporters and volunteers distributing medals and refreshments. For participants, finishing the marathon represents not only physical endurance but also a moment of celebration shared with thousands of fellow runners.

More than four decades after its founding, the Los Angeles Marathon remains one of the city’s signature events, an annual gathering that highlights athletic perseverance while showcasing the energy and cultural diversity of Los Angeles itself. Through its combination of competition, community involvement, and charitable impact, the marathon continues to inspire runners and spectators year after year.
