Living Art Comes Alive Again: Pageant of the Masters Enters 92nd Season in Laguna Beach

One of Southern California’s most cherished artistic traditions is once again captivating audiences as the 92nd season of the Pageant of the Masters continues its enchanting summer run in Laguna Beach. Running nightly through August 29, this year’s production—titled “Gold Coast: Treasures of California”—brings to life iconic artworks inspired by the state’s vibrant cultural heritage in a stunning celebration of artistry, performance, and imagination.

Set in the open-air Irvine Bowl amphitheater nestled within the coastal hills of Laguna Beach, the Pageant of the Masters is unlike any other art event in the world. The show features “living pictures,” or tableaux vivants, where real people pose in elaborate costume and makeup to recreate well-known works of art with uncanny precision. Under perfectly calibrated lighting and staging, the illusion is so convincing that viewers often forget they’re looking at live performers rather than painted canvases.

The production is the centerpiece of the annual Festival of Arts, an event that has long drawn visitors from across the country to this picturesque beach town. This summer, the festival’s theme centers around artworks and cultural moments deeply tied to California’s legacy, from indigenous history and Gold Rush-era scenes to modernist interpretations and Hollywood-inspired motifs. Artworks reimagined on stage are drawn from renowned institutions including the Getty, LACMA, the De Young Museum, and the Hilbert Museum, among others.

Since its humble beginnings in 1933, when local artist Lolita Perine first encouraged townspeople to dress as figures from classic paintings, the Pageant has evolved into a world-class production requiring precision, discipline, and a deep commitment to community artistry. More than 500 volunteers participate each year, contributing over 60,000 hours of time in roles ranging from performers to costumers, set builders, makeup artists, and technical crew. The show is narrated live each evening, accompanied by a full orchestra performing an original score that adds emotional depth and grandeur to the visual experience.

Each 90-minute performance takes the audience on a journey not only through different periods of art history but also through the cultural milestones that have shaped California itself. Beyond the spectacle of perfectly posed recreations, the Pageant weaves storytelling, history, and a touch of theatrical flair into each scene. The result is an immersive and often emotionally moving tribute to the enduring power of visual art and the people who make it come alive.

The Festival of Arts, which runs concurrently with the Pageant, is a destination unto itself. Set on a lush, terraced campus just steps from the Pacific Ocean, the festival features over 100 juried artists exhibiting works in a range of mediums, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and jewelry. Visitors can browse the open-air galleries, attend live music performances, take part in hands-on workshops, and meet the artists behind the creations. The festival’s family-friendly programming and laid-back sophistication reflect the creative spirit that defines Laguna Beach.

More than a quarter-million people are expected to attend the Pageant and the surrounding festival this season, highlighting the event’s importance not just as an entertainment attraction but as a cornerstone of the local economy and cultural identity. For locals, it’s a point of pride. For tourists, it’s a memorable immersion into one of California’s most unique artistic expressions.

As the sun sets and the stage lights rise each evening, the amphitheater transforms into a portal through time and imagination. Whether it’s a Renaissance masterpiece, a 20th-century portrait, or a whimsical nod to California’s pop culture, the Pageant of the Masters continues to awe audiences with its devotion to detail and its celebration of the human capacity to become art.

Tickets for the remaining performances are still available, though they are expected to sell out as the season nears its close. For those who have never experienced it, there is perhaps no better time than now to witness this extraordinary living tribute to the visual arts—where paintings breathe, and history stands still, if only for a moment.
