During the 1990s, his music experienced a resurgence as hip-hop artists utilized his catalog, a revival that earned him the title “King of Neo Soul,” a moniker bestowed upon him by the acclaimed singer Erykah Badu.

Ayers’s contributions are not limited to recordings; he composed the soundtrack for the Blaxploitation film Coffy, which has been recognized and sampled in various contemporary works, including Quentin Tarantino’s film Jackie Brown.
