California’s Population Sees Growth in 2024, Ending Previous Decline
Newly released data from the California Department of Finance indicates a continued population increase for California in 2024, marking the second consecutive year of growth. This resurgence is primarily concentrated in the state’s largest urban areas, suggesting a reversal of the recent trend known as the “California Exodus.”
Population Recovery Post-Pandemic
Following a historic decline during the pandemic, when California’s population shrank for the first time in decades, the latest statistics reveal that growth is returning to pre-pandemic levels. By the end of 2024, the state’s population was close to its highest recorded figure from April 2020, falling just 9,000 short of that peak.
Cities Leading the Way
Among California’s ten largest cities, seven experienced population increases, demonstrating a recovery from pandemic-related losses. The most notable growth occurred in:
- Bakersfield: 1.2% growth
- San Diego: 1% growth
- Los Angeles: 0.4% growth
In contrast, both San Jose and San Francisco in the Bay Area reported slight declines in population, with decreases of less than half a percentage point.
Migration Patterns and Natural Increase
The state’s population growth in 2024 can be attributed to a natural increase of 114,805 resulting from the birth rate exceeding the death rate. However, overall growth was tempered by net migration outflows, as approximately 7,000 residents relocated to other states.
Notably, over recent years, California has seen a greater number of residents leaving for states like Texas and Arizona than those moving within the state. International immigration, particularly from Asia, plays a crucial role in stabilizing population numbers amidst these outflows.
Housing Trends
While population growth is on the upswing, housing developments remain sluggish. In 2024, housing units increased by just 0.84%, mirroring the growth rate from the previous year and lagging behind many other states. Interestingly, Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) accounted for 20% of new housing constructions this year.
Government Response and Future Outlook
Governor Gavin Newsom remarked on the population influx, stating, “People from across the nation and the globe are coming to the Golden State to pursue the California Dream, where rights are protected and people are respected.” He emphasized the importance of continued investment in communities to sustain this momentum for the future.
