The Silver fire has rapidly progressed as of Monday morning, burning through approximately 1,250 acres in Inyo and Mono counties. Emergency evacuation measures have been enacted in response to the growing threat of the fire.

First identified at 2:11 p.m. on Sunday, the fire sparked at the intersection of Highway 6 and Silver Canyon Road, located north of the city of Bishop. Following its ignition, the fire quickly spread, crossing the highway and posing a significant threat to multiple structures in the region.

Due to the fire’s proximity and danger, evacuation orders have been issued for the following areas:

  • Laws in Inyo County
  • Chalfant in Mono County
  • White Mountain Estates neighborhood

The California Highway Patrol has established an evacuation center at the Benton Community Center, located at 58869 Highway 120 in Benton.

Road Closures and Fire Conditions

Both northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 6 remain closed from Five Bridges Road to State Route 120 East in Benton. The fire is currently reported to be 0% contained as of the latest updates.

The rapid spread of the fire has been exacerbated by challenging terrain and strong winds, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph recorded at the nearby Bishop Airport. The National Weather Service has issued a high-wind warning, predicting southwest winds between 25 to 35 mph, with gusts potentially increasing to 65 mph, effective through 9 p.m. on Monday.

Located east of the fire area is the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, known for housing some of the oldest trees on the planet. As of this morning, officials from Cal Fire could not immediately provide information regarding the fire’s potential impact on this critical environmental area.
