Visa Assurances for 2028 Olympics Addressed at IOC Session

During a recent address to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Pylos, Greece, Casey Wasserman, chair of the organizing committee for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, sought to alleviate concerns regarding visa and entry requirements for participating athletes and delegations. This discussion came amidst reports of potential travel restrictions under the previous administration.

IOC Leadership Changes

The 144th IOC session also marked a historic moment with the election of Kirsty Coventry as president, making her the first woman and first African to hold the position. Coventry, the sports minister of Zimbabwe and a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was elected to an eight-year term from a field of seven candidates.

Wasserman’s Statements on Visa Access

In front of 105 IOC members, Wasserman emphasized the United States’ commitment to inclusivity, stating, “irrespective of politics today, America will be open and accepting to all 209 countries for the Olympics.” He highlighted Los Angeles’ reputation as one of the most diverse cities in the world, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere for all participants.

Wasserman addressed apprehensions stemming from proposed travel bans affecting a total of 43 countries, which included strict visa protocols. He reassured attendees that he had made considerable progress in discussions with President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, asserting that securing visas for athletes would not present challenges.

Visa Procedures for Athletes

A majority of athletes competing in the Olympic Games, along with participants in events like the Leagues Cup and the men’s World Cup, will rely on B1/B2 tourist visas. These visas are commonly issued for those entering the U.S. for sporting events without compensation from American organizations.

Government Collaboration and Preparedness

Wasserman detailed the collaboration with multiple U.S. administrations, noting that “we have had four different administrations, three different presidents in our bid process.” He expressed confidence in the established commitments to ensuring access for all delegations. Highlighting proactive measures, he stated that the Commerce and State Departments under the Biden administration had implemented an accelerated visa program specifically for athletes, which he believes will streamline the process.

Supporting Local Communities

In addition to discussing visa issues, Wasserman touched upon recent wildfires affecting the area, including the Palisades and Eaton fires. Remarking on the resilience of the community, he assured IOC members that Olympic venues, including the Rivera Country Club, remained undamaged. He expressed a commitment to supporting those affected by the fires, stating, “What’s important is helping people get back into their homes and settled.”

Musical Contributions to the Olympics

Wasserman also hinted at exciting cultural elements for the Olympic Games, noting his representation of Kendrick Lamar; “I think it would be a pretty fair bet that Kendrick will be involved in the Olympics in Los Angeles in some way.” His dual roles as an Olympic organizer and talent agent indicate a promising fusion of sports and entertainment at the upcoming Games.

This discussion at the IOC session has set the tone for what organizers hope will be a successful and inclusive Olympic event in Los Angeles, reinforcing commitments to welcoming global participants and spectators alike.
