SAN DIEGO — Two U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers, Farlis Almonte and Ricardo Rodriguez, have been charged with accepting bribes to permit unauthorized entries into the United States at one of the busiest border crossings.

Both officers were stationed at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, where they are alleged to have facilitated the entry of individuals without proper documentation in exchange for thousands of dollars per vehicle. Prosecutors revealed that communication evidence linking them to human traffickers in Mexico was instrumental in the investigation. Additionally, unexpected cash deposits into their bank accounts raised further suspicions.

According to prosecutors, surveillance footage captured incidents where vehicles were waved through checkpoints without all occupants being documented. Evidence suggests that dozens of such undocumented entries occurred under the officers’ watch.

Pattern of Corruption
This case is part of a troubling trend; five CBP officers from the San Diego area have faced similar corruption charges over the last two years. Notably, former inspector Leonard Darnell George was sentenced to 23 years in prison for his involvement in accepting bribes to facilitate the passage of individuals and drug-laden vehicles through the San Ysidro crossing.
