Steve Kornacki Transitions to NBC News Following MSNBC Restructuring
Steve Kornacki, recognized for his keen data analysis and extensive political coverage, will no longer be seen with his iconic big board on MSNBC. The data expert has signed a new agreement with NBC that broadens his responsibilities across both the news and sports sectors of the network.
Changes at MSNBC
With MSNBC undergoing a corporate spinoff from its parent company, Comcast, Kornacki has opted to remain within NBC rather than join the newly independent cable network. The restructuring means that MSNBC will cultivate its own newsgathering team, separate from NBC News.
As part of his new deal, Kornacki will maintain his role as NBC’s lead analyst for interpreting polling data and election results. He will also contribute his expertise during key sporting events such as the Triple Crown, the Olympics, and NFL games.
New Appearances and Opportunities
Kornacki’s appearances will now span various NBC platforms, including the streaming service NBC News Now, as well as established programs such as “Meet the Press,” “Today,” and “NBC Nightly News.” A representative from NBC News confirmed this transition on Tuesday, while MSNBC’s spokesperson chose not to comment specifically on Kornacki’s departure.
In anticipation of its independent operation, MSNBC is actively recruiting over 100 journalists, signaling a significant shift in its staffing and organizational structure.
Future Projects and Interests
Under his new title as Chief Data Analyst, Kornacki will have the freedom to engage in projects across various media platforms, as long as they do not relate to politics or sports. He previously explored a different avenue by filming a game show pilot in 2022 and is likely to consider future hosting opportunities in entertainment.
Kornacki’s Impact and Legacy
During his tenure at MSNBC, Kornacki became a central figure in the network’s political commentary, known for his detailed analyses and marathon coverage, exemplified by his extensive use of an electoral college map during the 2020 presidential election. His enthusiasm and relatable style have garnered him widespread popularity, earning him a following that includes notable figures such as Chrissy Teigen and Leslie Jones.
In 2020, he was even acknowledged by People magazine as one of the “Sexiest Men Alive,” a title he humorously referenced in subsequent interviews.
A Shift in Talent
Kornacki’s decision marks another significant departure from MSNBC, following the exit of prominent host Joy Reid earlier this year. His journey began with political writing, leading to a contributor role at CNN, before joining MSNBC in 2012 as a co-host on “The Cycle.” After gaining popularity during the 2020 elections, he expanded into sports analytics, accurately predicting winning outcomes in high-profile events.
