Introducing ‘Modville’: A Neo-Noir Graphic Novel from Ridley Scott and Jesse Negron
Famed director Ridley Scott, known for his iconic films such as “Alien” and “Gladiator,” is venturing into the world of graphic novels with “Modville.” This four-issue series, set in a futuristic New Orleans in 2169, uniquely blends crime narrative with the complexities of artificial humans, known as mods.
About ‘Modville’
Created by Jesse Negron and co-written by Joe Matsumoto, the graphic novel explores deep themes surrounding father-daughter relationships and the essence of humanity. Unlike typical superhero reinterpretations that dominate the current market, “Modville” presents an original storyline aiming to connect directly with its audience.
Instead of releasing through major publishers such as Diamond or Penguin Random House, “Modville” will be available directly to consumers in a prestige format, consisting of a 200-page hardcover. This approach also includes a flexible release schedule, allowing for a more relaxed creative process.
Creative Collaboration and Development
Negron, who previously collaborated with both Ridley Scott and his brother Tony Scott, pitched the idea of merging comic books with cinematic storytelling to Tom Moran, the senior vice president of Scott Free Productions.
“As an entertainment company, especially these days, you have to evolve. We have to reach out and expand to new forms of entertainment,” said Moran.
Moran emphasized that Ridley Scott sees this expansion into graphic novels as a natural evolution for his production company, Scott Free.
Upcoming Launch at WonderCon
Negron will introduce “Modville” at WonderCon in Anaheim, accompanied by a special booth featuring themed displays. A panel discussion with key collaborators, including Negron and publisher Dave Elliott, will delve into the intricacies of adapting the project for comic format.
Challenges in Independent Publishing
As “Modville” prepares for release, it faces the reality of a challenging comic book market. The recent sale of Diamond Comic Distributors allows new opportunities; however, the dominance of major publishers complicates the path for smaller presses.
In 2024, analysis showed that out of the 40 best-selling graphic novels, only four were not produced by the major comic publishing companies, highlighting the uphill battle for independent titles in garnering attention.
Distinctive Publishing Approach
Mechanical Cake, the company founded by Negron and CFO Tom Sanders, aims to redefine how comics are published. Emphasizing quality over speed, they plan to release “Modville” as a limited edition without future reprints, enhancing its collectible value.
“We want to treat the publishing [of comics] the way the Europeans do with graphic novels,” explained Elliott.
Artistic Vision Guided by Ridley Scott
Scott’s influence extends beyond the project’s name; he has actively contributed to the storyline and visual aesthetics. Allen Elliott noted that Scott’s background in visual storytelling allows him to offer valuable feedback during production.
“In the beginning, the colors were a bit brighter and more vivid. And [Scott would say], ‘Maybe you can mute it a bit,’” highlighted Elliott.
Conclusion
“Modville” promises to be a unique addition to the graphic novel landscape, merging visual art with an innovative narrative structure. Through Scott and Negron’s collaboration, this project seeks to explore human themes while navigating the complexities of modern publishing.
As fans anticipate its release, “Modville” stands not only as a graphic novel but as a bold venture into new storytelling dimensions within the comic book medium.
