ZZ Top’s Frank Beard Steps Away for Health Reasons During Elevation Tour

Frank Beard, the drummer of legendary rock band ZZ Top, is pausing his participation in the ongoing Elevation tour due to a health concern. The band’s management announced on Saturday via social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that Beard requires immediate attention for a health issue, prompting his temporary absence from the tour.

Temporary Replacement Joined the Band

To fill the gap during Beard’s hiatus, the band has enlisted the help of John Douglas, a seasoned percussionist and a long-time technician for ZZ Top. Douglas is no stranger to stepping in for Beard, as he previously filled the role during an emergency appendectomy in Paris back in 2002.

Band’s History and Recent Changes

ZZ Top has seen significant change in recent years. The original lineup, which included Beard, frontman Billy F. Gibbons, and bassist Dusty Hill, had enjoyed a 51-year run together until Hill’s passing in his sleep in 2021 at the age of 72. In the wake of Hill’s death, Elwood Francis, who initially worked as a guitar technician, assumed the bassist position for the band.

Elwood Francis shared insights on his transition into this prominent role, stating, “When I first started doing it, Dusty was just sick and going home for a few weeks. It was entirely different; I was just helping out.” He acknowledged the weight of responsibility that accompanies his current position, reflecting on the initial lack of pressure he felt. “It’s just weird,” he remarked. “Dusty is their bass player. I’m not the bass player. I’m not in the band. I’ll never be in the band. I shouldn’t be in the band. It’s Dusty’s thing.”
