DoorDash and Coco Robotics Launch Delivery Robots in Los Angeles

In a significant advancement for urban food delivery, DoorDash has announced a new partnership with Coco Robotics, introducing environmentally-friendly delivery robots to the sidewalks of Los Angeles and Chicago.

Overview of the Partnership

On Thursday, DoorDash made the exciting announcement that customers in select areas of Los Angeles and Chicago could soon receive their food via small, zero-emission robots. This initiative aims to enhance the delivery experience while addressing environmental concerns.

About Coco Robotics

Coco Robotics, based in Santa Monica and founded by two UCLA graduates in 2020, boasts a fleet of over 1,000 delivery robots. These robots, which have been successfully navigating busy city streets for several years, are remotely operated by human controllers. Notably, Coco has already completed more than 400,000 successful deliveries in partnership with numerous restaurants.

Benefits for Restaurants

Utilizing delivery robots has the potential to transform restaurant operations. According to information provided by Coco, restaurants can save up to 50% in delivery costs by opting for robot deliveries instead of traditional human drivers. This cost-effectiveness is a key selling point for participating merchants.

Challenges and Controversies

Despite their advantages, food delivery robots face challenges in urban environments. Instances of pedestrians kicking or obstructing the robots have raised concerns, while cities like New York and San Francisco have imposed temporary bans due to congestion issues. Critics argue that delivery robots could displace human jobs and exacerbate urban traffic challenges.

Innovative Delivery Models

DoorDash Labs, the company’s robotics division involved in this new initiative, is also exploring other innovative delivery methods. Last year, they announced a collaboration with Wing, a drone delivery service. Wing’s drones began food deliveries in Christiansburg, Virginia, showcasing the multi-modal delivery approach that DoorDash envisions for the future.

Looking Ahead

With this partnership, Coco robots will be available to deliver orders from nearly 600 merchants through the DoorDash app in Los Angeles. The robots are designed for short delivery distances, with a median range of approximately one mile. “We believe the future of delivery will be multi-modal,” stated Harrison Shih, senior director of DoorDash Labs. “This partnership with Coco enables us to enhance our existing delivery network while promoting sustainability.”
