Dodgers Experience Enthusiastic Reception During Japan Trip
TOKYO — The Los Angeles Dodgers have increasingly become known as Major League Baseball’s “Team of Japan,” especially after a series of high-profile signings, including Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Roki Sasaki. Their efforts to increase their fan base in Japan are evident through numerous advertising partnerships and the broadcast of all their games on Japanese television.
First Impressions in Tokyo
Upon arriving in Tokyo for their season-opening series, Dodgers players and staff began to truly feel the impact of their popularity. On Thursday, fans dressed in Dodgers merchandise gathered at Tokyo Haneda Airport, eager to catch a glimpse of the team as they stepped off the plane from Phoenix. Unfortunately, the players were kept out of view due to airport partitions.
The following day, thousands of supporters filled the streets surrounding the iconic Tokyo Dome, proudly displaying their team colors in anticipation of the Dodgers’ first practice session.
A Stunning Workout Session
What awaited the team inside the Tokyo Dome was unparalleled—a crowd of over 10,500 fans, predominantly wearing white and blue, filled the lower bowl of the stadium to witness a routine practice. Manager Dave Roberts commented, “This is crazy, amazing,” reflecting the overwhelming support the team felt. Shortstop Miguel Rojas echoed this sentiment, stating, “It’s been overwhelming, to say the least.”
Enhanced Popularity and Support
The Dodgers’ growing popularity in Japan has been evident over the past year, marked by increased media coverage and a noticeable rise in Japanese fans attending their games, both at Dodger Stadium and during road trips. “We know that every morning, in the middle of the morning, the Dodger games are broadcast here in Japan,” Roberts noted.
This trip represents a significant milestone for the organization, highlighted by Roberts’ observations of Dodger merchandise spotted around Tokyo, which emphasized their brand’s reach within the city.
The Ohtani Effect
Much of the Dodgers’ popularity surge can be linked to their acquisition of Shohei Ohtani, who, despite a limited appearance at practice, ignited excitement among fans. His brief stint on the field, where he engaged in workouts, resulted in roaring applause from the fans. “When Sho came running out of the dugout, that was a pretty cool moment for all of us to witness,” remarked infielder Max Muncy.
Fans and Atmosphere
Each member of the Dodgers felt the fans’ passion, as many called out players’ names, including those yet to debut in MLB. The electric atmosphere transformed a routine practice into a vibrant occasion, motivating players like first baseman Freddie Freeman to aim for home runs during batting practice. Muncy noted the invigorating effect this had on the team, providing a boost after their long flight.
Looking Ahead
The Dodgers are set to play an exhibition game against Japan’s Yomiuri Giants before launching their regular season against the Chicago Cubs. This trip not only underscores their expanding influence but also positions them among the global giants of sports, as Rojas stated, “I think the Dodgers are trying to get right there with the biggest organizations in the world.”
