David Lee Roth Returns to the Stage at M3 Music Festival

David Lee Roth, famously known as “Diamond Dave,” made a triumphant return to the live music scene with his first public concert in over five years. The performance took place at the M3 Music Festival in Columbia, Maryland, where Roth captivated the audience with a 75-minute set featuring classic hits from his legendary band, Van Halen.

Setlist Highlights

According to reports from Ultimate Classic Rock, Roth commenced the show energetically with Van Halen’s iconic track, “Panama.” The setlist then rolled through fan favorites such as:

  • “You Really Got Me”
  • “Dance the Night Away”
  • “Runnin’ with the Devil”
  • “Jamie’s Cryin'”
  • “Hot for Teacher”
  • “Jump”

Roth’s closing number was the band’s Hot 100-topping single, “Jump,” which delighted the audience.

A Momentous Comeback

During the concert, Roth made light of his hiatus, joking that this performance represents “the end of my first retirement.” This remark was a nod to his earlier announcement in late 2021, where he indicated plans to step back from performing due to undisclosed health concerns. Following the concert, Ticketmaster unveiled over a dozen upcoming shows for Roth, commencing July 22 at the California Mid-State Fair in Paso Robles.

Recent Performance History

Roth’s return follows a private corporate performance for Home Depot in 2023, and an earlier stint opening for Kiss on tour until March 2020. His planned residency in Las Vegas, initially scheduled for early 2022, was ultimately canceled before it could begin.

Context of the Performance

This concert also occurred amidst discussions from Sammy Hagar, who succeeded Roth as the frontman of Van Halen in 1985. Hagar has recently shared insights about the band, stating that he and the late Eddie Van Halen had considered a reunion prior to Eddie’s passing in 2020. Additionally, Hagar suggested that Eddie had requested him not to discuss these plans with drummer Alex Van Halen.

Hagar’s endeavors continue with his Vegas residency at the Park MGM, while he hinted at Alex’s possible resentment over his own active performing status.

Legacy of Van Halen

The last performance of Van Halen took place in October 2015 at the Hollywood Bowl, concluding a tour that featured Roth on vocals alongside Wolfgang Van Halen on bass. The band’s profound influence on rock music remains undeniable, and Roth’s recent return further emphasizes the lasting connection fans have with their iconic sound.
